There's a plethora of tomatoes at Phillips Farm Market. And so much more
Shelves are always kept well stocked, no matter when you get there.
The vegetables are so beautiful, so colorful. Look at this heap, this pile of bright orange carrots.
They were grown in loose, loamy soil. How do I know - just look at the nice long straight roots.
Little fingerling potatoes, a heap of yellow skinned yellow fleshed next to a heap of mixed
yellow, red skinned white, and blue skin blue fleshed. Boil them, roast them, enjoy them!
It is the time of year when fresh corn is abundantly available. Plan on preparing it promptly.
The story goes that if you grow your own corn, start water boiling in the pot before you pick it.
Heaps of bell peppers - red, orange and yellow. Sweet enough to enjoy raw, just
cut in pieces or strips with the salad dressing of your choice in which to dip them.
Cole crops are all those members of the cabbage family. Some are grown for their leaves:
such as green and purple cabbages,
and savoy cabbage with somewhat wrinkled, more tender leaves
and Tuscan kale.
Then there are the cole crops where it is their flowers that we eat, like broccoli.
And these orange cauliflower, which get their color from the same pigments
that make carrots orange. In fact, the perhaps more familiar white cauliflower
are the result of selective breeding and blanching, assisted by tieing up
the outer leaves over the flower heads as they form to block the sunlight.
Did you know that the slightly lumpy head of cauliflower is called its "curd"?
The market also sells bunches of fresh herbs:parsley, dill, thyme, and more
to add flavor and savor to all these vegetables when you cook them
and heads of garlic, pungent member of the onion family.
As well as vegetables as colorful and pretty as a picture there are bouquets of mixed flowers
and bunches of sunflowers as bright as the summer sunny. There's more and more and more
fresh baked bread, apple cider donuts, refrigerated case of milk and milk products. All good.
